What it is like to live a few blocks away from a homeless resource center

From a business owner on 2100 South.

A needle left on his property.

The business owner and a client encountered a woman using drugs in the entry way to his business.

A broken window smashed by a local homeless person. The property owner said he has removed any large rocks he could find on his property to avoid additional damaged windows.

Smashed glass door to a side entrance.

Homeless person sleeping on the landscaped area in front of his business.

The business owner reports people have tried to steal copper wiring from his business. This photo shows the covers to his fuse box have been removed.

A homeless person created a place to sleep within the HVAC system that serves this business owner's building.

Gail Miller Resource Center Guest Points Gun at Business Owner

“Representative Steve Eliason, as a the sponsor of HB440 and Road Home Board Member, I thought you'd be interested in your work. This was pointed at me and others this morning, fired (luckily missed and hit his car) at another neighbor by a longtime "guest" of the Gail Miller Resource Center. The GMRC security and staff is aware of at least two of these in the possession of "guests" and despite these weapons being brought inside the GMRC, they were not confiscated.
Just making sure you are really at peace "flexing" the
GMRC and putting all of our safety at risk. Thanks for HB440 Steve. Councilmember Darin Mano, where is the outrage? Or peep out of you.” — Bob Danielson

Photos of Damaged Storefronts Near the Gail Miller Homeless Resource Center

Hi All,

Here are some photos I took last week while on walk about on 300 west.

These photos are between 1700 south and High Avenue( the street going to the GMHRC back entrance.) I did not go down any side streets because I don’t like getting in the middle of drug deals, they are bad for my health.

Notice the Fence/Wall area. That was a camp 2 weeks ago with @ 20 people living there. It is directly across 300 west  from Paramount Ave/Gail Miller HRC and I don’t think the staff at the HRC knew anything about it. I liked to think of it as the GMHRC annex !! Party on Wayne! Just like at the GMHRC !!

Notice all the broken windows ! How the hell are we supposed to heat our buildings this winter with this constant vandalism? Most of us keep them boarded up because what’s the point in replacing them when they just get broken out again.

That’s not doing a lot for the 300 West Façade Beautification Program the city is bragging about !

This week I’ll do a walk about from High Ave to 800 south.

Local Hair Salon Owner Reports Problems Caused by Homeless Living On His Property

Here is a man passed out in the alleyway with the heroin needle still sticking out of his arm as I left work.

Here is the big hole in the fence from where the firefighters cut the fence to put out the fire that burned half of this lot.

Here is the pile of glass that greeted me when I went to work. I had to spend the first half hour of my day sweeping it up so that I could drive into my parking lot.

This is the debris from fire number 6 mentioned above.

Additional Observations of this Local Business Owner:

Today we had the 6th fire in a small area. Yes, I said 6th. They were all started by transients. The first one was against a vacant building on the corner. The next day, the second one burned about half of a vacant lot down our alleyway. It is a 1/3 acre lot. You can imagine how dangerous a fire like that is to the buildings that are up against that property. I will include a picture of it. The third and 4th were smaller and in different areas in the parking lot south of us that caught weeds and debris on fire. The 5th one was a cooking fire up against an enormous tree that caught the tree on fire. The fire department had to cut out about 1 foot into the tree at the base to make sure the fire was out. Number 6 was today, a transient with 5 carts of random “belongings” accidentally caught his stuff on fire, and kicked it around the whole parking lot. I worry about our safety, and the safety of my beautiful salon when there are constant fires happening next to us.

We had to call the police 10 times in an 12 day period. A group of transients moved into our alleyway. I told them they need to leave, and can’t set up blocking the road, since we need to be able to drive into our parking lot. Ever since then, when we drive by, they yell at us and threaten us. We have had to see the woman, and one of the men fully exposed. My partner and I have had to deal with repeated anti-gay slurs, and we wish we could feel safe driving down our alleyway.

The police have told them to leave 4 or 5 times, but they just leave for a couple hours, then come back. One of them was arrested, and the cops said she wouldn’t be a problem anymore, but she was back the next day, and continues to be a problem.

Michelle Hoon and the SLC mobile app have become inefficient again. There were 3 piles of feces and dozens of shot needles down the alleyway that we reported, they didn’t make it out to take care of it for 2 weeks. By then the transients had shoveled all of that into a pile with a bunch of dirt and weeds, so it is all hidden, and was never cleaned up.

We looked into getting an alley vacation, but since there is a power line that runs down the alley, so I was told we wouldn’t succeed in getting it. Do you have any other suggestions on things we can do?

We would love for the city to give us more support in handling the challenges we are experiencing, and wholeheartedly wish the administration would take a more hands-on approach to the issues that keep us up at night. If the city can start to prosecute illegal activities like public nudity, drug use, etc then maybe we can feel safe at our business again.

As an update: While I was typing this email, one of my stylists called to say that there is another pile of belongings on fire in the parking lot. While she was waiting for our gate to close, the woman at the camp was screaming obscenities at her and telling her to keep going, while flipping her off.

Pierpont Apartments: Homeless Man Breaks Window

Two seconds into this video you can see the tall window in the middle of the frame is shattered. Then the perpetrator is seen picking up something.

The man was arrested, booked and immediately released because the SLCPD has a policy that if it is a property crime they are not held. That policy is NOT dependent on if the jail is full or not. He is a repeat offender according to the Detective covering the case. They won't release his name to us so we can follow the case without a GRAMMA request but that is no guarantee we will get it. We have made the request which takes 2-4 weeks before a response is issued. The offender was back at the property the following day but fortunately did not display any more aggressive behavior. The detective said it is very likely that he won't show up for court based on past behavior IF the District Attorney decides to prosecute (we don't have a say in the matter even though we are the victim). If he doesn't show up, a warrant is issued. Since he has regular encounters with the SLCPD they will be able to arrest him and hold him under the warrant.

Encampment Near Smith's Ballpark is Affecting a Local Business

Owner of Utah Real Estate Professionals, near Smith's Ballpark, reports his business has been adversely affected by the nearby homeless encampment. He has seen residents of the camp shoot up on his doorstep and use his property as a toilet.

The above encampment is on the park strip on main street in front of the Smith's Ballpark.

A young women seen shooting up near the front door of the business.

The residents of the encampment use this corner of the property as their toilet.

This morning, I arrived at work to find the latest encampment near my facility. I took these photos from a distance. They started Flipping me off and calling me every word that can't be used here. The person sitting closest to my facility was very confrontational. It felt very unsafe. A few of the individuals got up and started to walk toward me then veered off across main street when they got close. Yelling at me the entire time.

I also found human waste on the north side of the facility. I contacted 911 but changed to request to non emergency after most of the group crossed the stree.

It is hard for me to understand how the city is allowing main streets to have these issues. THE FACT THAT I HAVE TO LOCK OUR FRONT DOORS AND TELL MY STAFF TO STAY INSIDE IS RIDICULOUS.

Human waste.
